Who Needs a Dental Implant?
Dental implants have a lot of great benefits for a lot of different people. If you have trouble speaking because of tooth loss, you can benefit from having an implant, and it will fill in the gaps that are giving you trouble when trying to talk.
You may have spent a lot of time avoiding certain foods because of your missing tooth or teeth. Maybe you couldn’t chew a steak, or you had a hard time with foods that were not soft. Dental implants can solve that issue as well.
If you go a long time without teeth, your jaw can start to deform, which will cause issues for you down the line if you don’t get treatment. Dental implants can prevent jawbone deterioration.
Dentures can be ill-fitting, which puts you at risk of infection. Ill-fitting dentures can rub against your gums and cause them to become inflamed. Dental implants reduce your risk of gum disease related to dentures.
Process of Getting a Dental Implant
Getting dental implants starts with assessing a patient to determine if they would be a good candidate. We need to ensure that you have enough jawbone structure to secure the implant.
Once we can determine that this is a good fit for you, you will undergo the procedure to get the screw planted into your jawbone. This post will take a while to recover, so you will likely be given a temporary denture piece to wear over it while you heal.
Once you have healed enough, you can receive the crown that gets placed permanently onto the post. You should be able to enjoy the results after this is set, and dental implants will restore your smile.
Dental Sedation for Getting a Dental Implant
You will be offered dental sedation for your procedure. In most cases, you will be given some level of conscious dental sedation unless you are getting a complete set of dental implants. In that case, you will be under general anesthesia and very closely monitored.
Dentists are not usually willing to do general anesthesia for one or two dental implants because it does not come without risks of putting you under for your procedure.
Several sedation options will have you calm, relaxed, and sleepy without the added risk of being under general anesthesia. We can use a combination of medications to relax you and block the pain.
That may include oral medication such as Valium or Ativan. It may be nitrous oxide: or laughing gas. It can also be IV sedation that does not render you completely unconscious. You will also be able to receive Novocain shots to block the procedure’s pain.
