According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 26% of adults age 65 and older have 8 or fewer teeth. Many of them likely wear a partial or complete denture. Dentures can be challenging to adjust to and live with daily. Patients could ask their dentists about implants, but not all patients are candidates for conventional dental implants. That doesn’t mean these patients are destined to struggle with unstable dentures for the rest of their lives. Alternative implant treatments, called mini dental implants, help secure your dentures. As the name suggests, mini dental implants are smaller versions of traditional dental implants. They were created to help secure dentures, but they have numerous uses today. You can schedule a free consultation to discuss mini dental implants in Scottsdale and begin a customized treatment plan.

Alternative Teeth Replacements Using Mini Dental Implants in Scottsdale

Conventional dental implants are approximately 4 mm to 5 mm around. Mini dental implants, or MDIs, have a diameter of under 3 mm. These miniature implants come in varying lengths, and your dentist will choose the best size to match your jaw shape and size.

Traditional dental implants have three stages that require multiple appointments. First, the dentist must place a titanium post on the jawbone. Then, they attach an abutment onto the post to support the artificial tooth. The last stage consists of fitting the replacement tooth onto the supporting abutment.

Mini dental implants have a single titanium rod with a connected adapter. The adapter allows the denture or artificial tooth to connect to the implant using a socket and O-ring.

Procedure for Mini Dental Implants in Scottsdale

Many dental offices provide a free consultation to discuss your MDI options. During the consultation, they will take X-rays of your teeth so the dentist can determine the best placement for the implant.

On the day of your MDI appointment, your dentist will:

  • Apply a local anesthetic to numb the tissues
  • Create a small hole in your jaw
  • Place the titanium post into the hole and secure and tighten it
  • Attach the artificial tooth to the post
  • Confirm that the artificial tooth is well-placed and secure

The appointment length may vary, depending on the patient’s individual needs and preexisting medical conditions.

After Your Mini Dental Implant Appointment

Although every patient responds differently to treatment, the healing process is relatively quick. It’s common to experience some discomfort post-procedure, but it can be alleviated with ibuprofen. Most patients report returning to regular activities within 24 to 48 hours.

It’s best to stick to a soft diet consisting of foods like yogurt, oatmeal, soups, and milkshakes for several days. Your dentist will let you know how long you need to continue your soft diet. Eating hard or sticky foods could increase the implant’s risk of becoming loose and falling out.

At-Home Care for Mini Dental Implants in Scottsdale

You won’t have to change much about your home oral hygiene routine to care for your mini dental implant. Brush twice daily, floss once, and schedule routine visits with your dentist for checkups.
