If you’re thinking about Botox, read on to see what it is and what it offers.

What Is Botox for Men?

Botox for Men in Scottsdale, AZBotox is an FDA-approved drug made from a toxin created by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

When injected, Botox blocks nerve signals to the targeted muscles and relaxes them. This softens wrinkles made from expression lines, also called dynamic wrinkles.

Dynamic wrinkles form after repeated muscle movement. The most common types of expression lines are:

  • Frown lines between eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead creases
  • Smile lines

Men who choose Botox most often opt to target forehead lines, glabellar lines, and crow’s feet, but there are numerous areas that Dr. Todd Shatkin can help you perfect.

More men are also choosing Botox injections along the jawline and chin for a slimmer, more defined jaw. Having a smooth forehead is particularly helpful for men who have a receding hairline since light reflects upward, giving them a younger appearance.

Botox for men can also help treat acne since the drug can slow the production of oil. If you have acne scars, it can also help reduce their appearance by releasing the muscle tension that causes the scars to show.

Botox for men focuses on creating a more masculine look and requires more injections and higher doses than Botox for women. Men tend to have faster metabolisms, so they can absorb the injection more rapidly.

They also have heavier skin tissue in the face, which makes the muscles that create expressions stronger, requiring more Botox to relax them. By safely offering larger doses, Dr. Shatkin ensures you can still get the lasting results you want.

Best Candidates

Botox for men is perfect for men who want a refreshed, more youthful appearance without having to turn to surgical procedures. The best candidates are those who are in overall good health, have no history of neuromuscular disease, and have dynamic wrinkles they would like softened.

If you have both dynamic and static wrinkles, Dr. Shatkin may suggest pairing Botox with dermal fillers. If you have a skin infection in the treatment area, he will recommend you delay Botox treatment.

Benefits of Botox for Men

Botox for men allows you to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines without worrying about downtime. Apart from giving you a rejuvenated look, it can also prevent future signs of aging. Regular injections of Botox teach your facial muscles to be softer, which will keep new dynamic wrinkles from forming.

Botox is an excellent treatment against excess sweating as well. For men who tend to sweat more profusely, it can offer the relief you need.

Unlike some other treatments, Botox is perfect for all skin types, including oily skin. Additionally, Botox is easily paired with fillers and Aquagold Fine Touch to offer even more radiant skin.

Preparing for Botox for Men

When you schedule a consultation with Dr. Todd Shatkin at Scottsdale Dental and Facial Aesthetics, he will assess your skin and the areas you would like treated.

Tell him your medical history, including any previous experiences you may have had with Botox for men or other injectables. If you take muscle relaxants, sleep aids, and other medications, or if you’re allergic to any injectables, let the doctor know. Mention supplements you take, including herbal ones.

Most doctors will ask you to stop taking blood thinners, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and St. John’s Wort, for at least four days before the Botox appointment. Other supplements you want to stop using include:

  • Ginkgo biloba
  • Ginseng
  • Fish oil
  • Vitamin E

Avoid chemical peels, suntans, or facials at least a couple of weeks before treatment, and do not drink alcohol or coffee the day before the injections. For three days before treatment, don’t use topical products like Retin-A, Retinols, Glycolic Acid, or Retinoids, and avoid bleaching, tweezing, or waxing the area.

If you want to get your workout in for the day, do so before the procedure because you will not be able to exercise for at least a few hours after treatment.

At the Botox Appointment

On the day of your appointment, Dr. Todd Shatkin requests you come with a clean face. Do not apply lotions, sunscreen, or any other topical solution.

The first appointment may be a bit longer than subsequent ones because Dr. Shatkin will make sure that you understand exactly what the procedure will be like before starting. You can expect the entire procedure to last about 30 minutes.

The doctor might apply an anesthetic before beginning, depending on skin sensitivity and the injection site, and you can request it if you would feel more comfortable with a numbing agent. The number of injections you receive will depend on the treatment area, your muscle mass, and other factors.

Once the procedure finishes, Dr. Shatkin will apply ice and light pressure, and then you will be ready to continue your day.

Aftercare for Botox for Men

There is no downtime and no follow-up appointments to schedule, but you may want to book your next session so that your results remain consistent.

Don’t touch, massage, or scratch your face for a few hours after treatment so that the product can settle in your muscles. You want to also avoid lying down for at least four hours after your appointment and avoid exercising for at least 24 hours to give Botox the best chance of producing the results you want.

Dr. Shatkin recommends you avoid alcohol for 24 hours after Botox and do not schedule other facial treatments like facials or scrubs for the same day. Stay out of the sun for a day or two and avoid other sources of heat, like tanning beds, saunas, hot tubs, and even hot baths.

You will start seeing results two or three days after the injections, but you will not see the full effect of treatment until 10 to 14 days have passed.

On average, the effects of Botox for men last three to six months. As you get more treatments, your muscles will learn to contract less often, letting you space out treatments over longer periods of time.
